Things like this just make me laugh. A few vegetarian communities are touting this as evidence that vegetarians are smarter than non-vegetarians. How ridiculous! Luckily Dr. Phillips bonks the nail on the head near the end of the article, "[d]o people become vegetarian because they have a very high IQ or is it just that they tend to be more aware of health issues?" What is clear from the study is that people with higher IQs tend to be more health conscious--and that's pretty much it. I think this quote sums it up nicely, "[t]here was no difference in IQ score between strict vegetarians and those who said they were vegetarian but who reported eating fish or chicken."

After looking over countless studies, there is a pretty clear trend health-wise: lacto-oval vegetarians, occasional fish eaters, and vegans with supplementation tend to be the longest lived and healthiest in each study (vegans without supplementation don't do as well, they tend to be doing just a little better than, or about as good as, non-red meat eaters). This health information is available to anyone to look over, my guess is that there is a higher subset of health conscious people in the set of people with high IQs. They look this over and decide to change diets.
